Outpost Street Art Project @ Cockatoo Island

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

It’s not something that hasn’t been done before – but Cockatoo Island is being taken over once more by art this Summer, with Outpost Project, an inaugural street art festival that will be the largest in the southern hemisphere. Headline works by more than 150 artists and collectives from around the world, including heavyweights Banksy, Anthony Lister and Will Coles. The festival will transform Cockatoo Island between 4 November and 11 December, with static and live street art creations including aerosol art, stencilling, paste-ups, stickers, cup-rocking, sculpture and installations. And entry is free with your ferry ticket.

MONA in Hobart

Mona---Nick-Watt-2

One of the more refreshingly odd contributions to Australia’s museum and donation history, the Museum of Old and New Art is the ‘art of shock’ invention of David Walsh. Funded by the multi-millionaire’s acquired gambling fortune, MONA has amassed nothing but awestruck accolades since its opening last year. A phenomenal success of ingenuity, board the boat across to the Museum/Hotel/Cemetery complex, where you can expect ancient Egyptian tombs alongside rotting animal carcasses and a Madonna karaoke machine.

NEW CONTEMPORARY ART COLLECTION AT THE NSW GALLERY

resizedcoverimage

If ever a State Gallery wanted to receive a gifted contemporary art collection, they would be hard-pressed to find a better donor than John Kaldor. The eminent collector gifted his entire collection of Sol Lewitt, Andreas Gursky, Christo, Jeff Koons and more to the AGNSW’s recently unveiled underground floor. An almost ‘best-of’ the past 40 years of international contemporary art, and with free entry, it’s a must-see.

PUNK, ART AND AFTER

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

gobetweensgobetweens

Melbourne><Brisbane: punk, art and after  is an exhibition that illustrates the connection between the social and political conditions of the 1970s and early 80s in Melbourne and Brisbane, and the music and art emerging out of the two cities at that time.

With a particular focus on punk music, the exhibition compares and contrasts the punk bands emerging out of the two cities, such as The Lunatic Fringe and The Go-Betweens, and traces their influence on punk music in Australia since then.

While this exhibition does focus on the punk music genre, art, photography and history enthusiasts will also enjoy this fascinating exhibition.
