Alain de Botton talk @ Sydney Opera House

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

One of the world’s most famous contemporary philosophers is visiting Sydney. In the past, Alain de Botton’s essay-style books have unravelled love, travel, architecture and literature. Now he brings his distinctive style to the subject of religion. And not least, he asks what it offers non-believers. Disagreeing within the shunning of religion absolutely, he considers how atheists can reform a use or even appreciation of, what can be consoling and beautiful rituals and concepts. In his talk at Sydney Opera House, Religion for Atheists De Botton will fashion an interesting and, he hopes, helpful alternative.

Carine Roitfeld, ‘Irreverant’

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Following her resignation as editor-in-chief of French Vogue, the fashion world waited with baited breath as to what Carine Roitfeld would do next. And the result has been delivered – in the form of a 368-page retrospective, a photographic memoir of her past 30 years of editorship. Produced in collaboration with Purple Magazine editor Olivier Zahm, the impeccably collated book exudes the same ‘je ne sais quoi’ that brought the editrix to style supremacy 30 years ago.

LICKSHOT

Friday, February 19th, 2010

lickshotlickshotLate last year Australian photographer Ben Watts released what has been dubbed his “photo scrapbook and travel diary,” a book that encapsulates his creative and photographic talents, and, in essence, his life. Lickshot: A Photo Scrapbook is comprised of a vast array of images – from famous celebrities such as rapper Pharell to a rough collage of of a model executing different poses in black and white. While each page is unique and insightful, what is perhaps most touching is Watt’s inclusion of his close friend, the late Heath Ledger on the cover.

Inspiring, fascinating, empowering, educational. Lickshot: A Photo Scrapbook is a definite must buy.

THE SARTORIALIST

sartorialist

If you’re visiting this site you’re obviously a fan of all things fashion, and I am sure you have noticed the ever increasing popularity of “street style.” Rather than turning to the runways and magazines for inspiration, we tend to visit websites or blogs that feature images of everyday people, going about their everyday lives, wearing incredibly stylish, inspirational outfits. There is an emphasis on individual style and creativity, rather than how well one can follow the latest trend.

Arguably the founder of this “street style” phenomenon is Scott Schuman, the man behind The Sartorialist, a blog that began because “I…simply [wanted] to share photos of people that I saw on the streets of New York that I thought looked great.” Much to our delight, Schuman has recently released a book that encapsulates his favourite images of everyday stylish people doing their thing around the world.
