If you’ve already caught Woody Allen’s latest, Midnight in Paris, you would’ve had a hard time forgetting the brief yet mesmerizing scenes featuring Léa Seydoux. Previously acting in films within her mother country, the French actress seems to all of a sudden gained recognition on the international circuits, nabbing a 2012 Prada Campaign, alongside a role in the latest Mission Impossible film. Check her out in the video for Prada’s latest fragrance, Candy.

Burning Man

Already relieving acclaim from Australian film critics and the international film festival circuit alike, Jonathon Teplitzky’s latest film, Burning Man, seems set to go down in Australian film history. The complex time-jumping structure of his direction eventuates in the telling of Tom (Matthew Goode)’s story, a chef at a chic Sydney restaurant. Piecing together the fragmented editing, we see Tom endure a life-altering tragedy in toe with all its ramifications, accumulating up on itself at each turn to end in a fulfilling and extremely moving experience. Certainly recommended, but not a viewing for the faint-hearted.

Burning Man hits independent cinemas on November 17.

Higher Planes Sound Book

Ever found the prospect of meditation a little intimidating? Well a collaborative project between Siberia and New Planes has just resulted in a solution. A meditative cassette tape with dual sides symbolic of Ying and Yang, the Higher Planes Sound Book is an ambient soundscape. As 15 tracks melt in and out of each other with influences of tribal chimes, drones, and field recordings, the meditative results come easily – with the music acting to stabilize breathing and empty active thinking. It’s only $5, but with a limited release of only 300 editions, you’d better be quick.

Alain de Botton talk @ Sydney Opera House

One of the world’s most famous contemporary philosophers is visiting Sydney. In the past, Alain de Botton’s essay-style books have unravelled love, travel, architecture and literature. Now he brings his distinctive style to the subject of religion. And not least, he asks what it offers non-believers. Disagreeing within the shunning of religion absolutely, he considers how atheists can reform a use or even appreciation of, what can be consoling and beautiful rituals and concepts. In his talk at Sydney Opera House, Religion for Atheists De Botton will fashion an interesting and, he hopes, helpful alternative.

Outpost Street Art Project @ Cockatoo Island

It’s not something that hasn’t been done before – but Cockatoo Island is being taken over once more by art this Summer, with Outpost Project, an inaugural street art festival that will be the largest in the southern hemisphere. Headline works by more than 150 artists and collectives from around the world, including heavyweights Banksy, Anthony Lister and Will Coles. The festival will transform Cockatoo Island between 4 November and 11 December, with static and live street art creations including aerosol art, stencilling, paste-ups, stickers, cup-rocking, sculpture and installations. And entry is free with your ferry ticket.

Edward Gants amazing feats of loneliness

If enticed by the prodigiously good title, Sydney Theatre Company’s production of Anthony Nielsen’s play (directed by Sarah Goodes), is just as intriguing as it presumes. With costumes by Australian duo Romance Was Born, and set loosely in 19th Century Europe, Gant divulges tales of freakish fringe-dwellers on a quest for social normality. With old-theatre tropes of flour-white makeup, exposed hairnets, and outrageous Dandy costumes, the play is a feast for the eyes and mind.

Splendour in the grass

Having recently moved from Byron to the mystical Woodfordia grounds in Queensland – this Aussie Festival is proving its all the better for it. Last year’s headliners were The Strokes and Pixies, and for 2011 they scored impressive exclusivity to Coldplay and Kanye, all the while supporting local acts excellently.
