Higher Planes Sound Book

Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Ever found the prospect of meditation a little intimidating? Well a collaborative project between Siberia and New Planes has just resulted in a solution. A meditative cassette tape with dual sides symbolic of Ying and Yang, the Higher Planes Sound Book is an ambient soundscape. As 15 tracks melt in and out of each other with influences of tribal chimes, drones, and field recordings, the meditative results come easily – with the music acting to stabilize breathing and empty active thinking. It’s only $5, but with a limited release of only 300 editions, you’d better be quick.

Splendour in the grass

Friday, July 29th, 2011

Having recently moved from Byron to the mystical Woodfordia grounds in Queensland – this Aussie Festival is proving its all the better for it. Last year’s headliners were The Strokes and Pixies, and for 2011 they scored impressive exclusivity to Coldplay and Kanye, all the while supporting local acts excellently.

SIA

Hailing from Adelaide, talented songstress Sia Furler is renowned for her tendency to transcend just one musical genre as she blends jazz, blues and pop influences to create refreshingly unique, yet nevertheless catchy tunes.

Sia’s latest album, We are Born epitomises her versatility, as pop influenced tracks “You’ve changed” and “Clap your hands” compel us to jump up and dance, while the thought provoking “Hurting me now” creates a more sombre tone. Sia’s cover of Madonna’s “Oh Father” is perhaps the most enchanting, as it displays her ability to recreate an already highly acclaimed song and make it her own.

We are Born is available at all good record stores.

MAGNETIC

Combine the likes of former Ima Robot front man Alex Ebert with a group of nine amazingly talented musicians and vocalists; add some 1960’s musical influence, along with a poncho and possibly a Kombi, and you find yourself listening to the nu-wave folk tunes of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zero’s.

With critically acclaimed singles such as “Home” and “Desert Song”, the Los Angeles based ensemble is renowned for their mellow, albeit upbeat tunes. Their debut album, Up From Below is available at all good record stores now.

THE XX

The XX, just another indie new wave pop band from the UK?! I think not. With influences ranging from  “Aaliyah to CocoRosie, Rihanna to The Cure, Missy Elliot to Chromatics, The Kills to Ginuwine, Pixies to Mariah Carey and Justin Timberlake  to Tracy + The Plastics” this talented threesome are destined for big things.

Released in August 2009, the band’s debut album “xx” is comprised of eleven artfully written and produced songs as the amazing vocals of Romy Madley and Oliver Sim combine with lyrics of loss and love and are accompanied by superbly crafted musical compositions.

Having already toured Australia with the Laneway Festival earlier this year, it is unlikely that the band will return in the near future, but we can always dream! For now their debut album is available at all good music stores.

If you haven’t already heard of French indie rock/pop band Phoenix, then prepare to! Since the release of their fourth album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, in May 2009 the band has gone from strength to strength, celebrated for their catchy, easygoing tunes. Favourites include the upbeat “Lisztomania” and the more rock orientated “1901,” while my personal favourite is the more chilled out (and possibly a little more depressing..!) “Lasso.”

Phoenix are touring nationally at the start of March. With most venues already sold out, tickets are limited, so hurry, Phoenix are genuinely a band not to be missed!
